Course Description

This professional development course is for people already working as Medical Laboratory Assistants, Medical Laboratory Technologists, and Combined Laboratory and X-Ray Technologists. This course enhances the knowledge that the learner has gained in their work experience, provides a review of previously studied concepts, and adds new supplementary learning objectives. Discover the theory and techniques used in one of the most performed tests in the diagnostic laboratory: urinalysis. Urinalysis is used to test for a variety of disorders, like kidney disease or diabetes, and includes analyzing the appearance, concentration, and constituents of urine. Gain an understanding of the processes for chemical testing, microscopic examination of urine and the importance of quality assurance processes. Review renal anatomy and physiology to correlate urinalysis with pathological conditions of the kidneys. This course will refresh your knowledge on the normal and abnormal constituents of urine sediments microscopic examination, the tests performed during chemical analysis of urine, and how to recognize the physical characteristics of urine from a healthy individual as well as the physiological processes that lead to the formation of urine. This is a self-directed, independent study course completed at your own pace. To enroll, you must be a current practicing MLA, MLT or CLXT.
