Course Description

Prepare yourself for the Fifth Class Power Engineering Provincial exam and build your practical knowledge of important power engineering and boiler-related topics.

Fifth class power engineers commonly work as operators in small commercial plants, such as malls and large buildings, or as residential managers or custodians of smaller schools, offices and apartment buildings.

Discover the principles of design, operation, and maintenance of high-pressure boilers and auxiliaries, and the mechanical and electrical equipment used in heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems. Explore mathematics, mechanics, thermodynamics and more.

With the knowledge that you gain in this course, you will be prepared to challenge the Fifth Class Power Engineering provincial exam.

Upon successful completion of this course, students may apply to the Alberta Boiler Safety Association (ABSA) to write the Power Engineering 5th Class provincial exam. Contact ABSA (www.absa.ca) for more information.

Note: In order to earn a 5th Class Certificate of Competency, the candidate must have six months of high-pressure plant or low-pressure heating plant experience. Prospective students should contact ABSA for their time evaluation.

Recommended: Grade 10 English, Mathematics and Physics or equivalent.

Notes

A Mobius license is required to access the practice exercises and exams in this course. A one-year license is $39.95 and is transferable to other NAIT courses.

Classes are delivered online via Microsoft Teams. A device with a working webcam, microphone and speakers is required to write the online supervised tests.

The final exam for this course is written in person, either at NAIT or at a pre-approved testing centre if more than 100 km from campus.
