Course Description

Explore the operation of key industrial systems that drive modern power engineering. This topic is relevant for professionals responsible for plant operations, equipment oversight, or energy efficiency initiatives in utility and process environments. Examine how prime movers, compressors, refrigeration systems, and cogeneration units contribute to performance, and investigate how maintenance, safety, and wastewater treatment strategies ensure reliable operation. Analyze system components and functions to enhance efficiency, safety, and regulatory compliance. With the skills gained in this course, you will be able to explain the operation of prime movers in power engineering to support efficient, safe, and compliant facility operations.

Please note, this course was formerly offered as POWC304- Power Engineering Third Class Part B – CML. POWC304 has been split into two different courses to better cover the content: POWC307 (this course) and POWC308. POWC307 corresponds to SOPEEC Part B Paper 3B1.

Upon successful completion of the four 3rd Class theory courses, students may apply to the Alberta Boiler Safety Association (ABSA) to receive 6 months’ credit toward the work experience required for certification as a 3rd Class Power Engineer.

To take this course, you must have successfully completed Power Engineering 4th Class Part A and Part B theory courses. If these were completed at a different institution, then you will need to submit your official transcript or a copy of your 4th Class certificate for enrollment. (Email to PECML@nait.ca)

It is highly recommended that you have also completed your 4th Class certification with ABSA (or the relevant authority in your jurisdiction), as you will not be able to write 3rd Class certification exams until you are fully certified at the 4th Class level.

Recommended: 50% or better in Grade 10 English, Math, and Science.

Notes

A Mobius license is required to access the practice exercises and exams in this course. A one-year license is $39.95 and is transferable to other Power Engineering courses.
