Course Description

Boiler systems are central to safe, efficient, and compliant power engineering operations. This course introduces learners to the design, operation, and control of boilers, feedwater systems, pumps, and pressure vessels in industrial settings. Participants will explore boiler designs, fittings, draft systems, and control mechanisms, and explain water treatment processes essential to maintaining boiler integrity. The course also covers pump applications, pressure vessel concepts, and welding inspection procedures. With the skills gained in this course, you will be able to describe boilers as they relate to power engineering to support safe, efficient, and code-compliant operations.

Please note, this course was formerly offered as POWC304- Power Engineering Third Class Part B – CML. POWC304 has been split into two different courses to better cover the content: POWC307 and POWC308 (this course). POWC308 corresponds to SOPEEC Part B Paper 3B2.

Upon successful completion of the four 3rd Class theory courses, students may apply to the Alberta Boiler Safety Association (ABSA) to receive 6 months’ credit toward the work experience required for certification as a 3rd Class Power Engineer.

To take this course, you must have successfully completed Power Engineering 4th Class Part A and Part B theory courses. If these were completed at a different institution, then you will need to submit your official transcript or a copy of your 4th class certificate for enrollment. (Email - PECML@nait.ca)

It is highly recommended that you have also completed your 4th Class certification with ABSA (or the relevant authority in your jurisdiction), as you will not be able to write 3rd Class certification exams until you are fully certified at the 4th Class level.

Recommended: 50% or better in Grade 10 English, Math, and Science.

Notes

A Mobius license is required to access the practice exercises and exams in this course. A one-year license is $39.95 and is transferable to other Power Engineering courses.
