Course Description

The boreal forest represents 25 percent of the world's remaining intact forests. It is the largest natural region in Alberta and plays a critical role in protecting our climate from carbon emissions. Sustainable forest management is essential in ensuring that boreal forests are healthy and thriving. From canopy-closing trees to the understory species of the forest floor, it is essential to identify the key species that contribute to sustainable forest management and recovery. With the skills gained in this course, you will be able to identify the boreal plant species vital to preserving biodiversity. Graduates of this course will be able to identify common boreal forest plant communities and plant species appropriate for reclamation and reforestation using reference materials, knowledge of basic plant anatomy and terminology, and recognition of distinctive characteristics. This course uses immersive training using 360° images and video technology to provide quality and culturally appropriate learning experiences.
