Course Description

Explore the social, political and business drivers affecting privacy, and privacy design in Big Data platforms. Upon successful completion of this course you will be able to describe privacy issues in data collection and aggregation for Business Intelligence (BI). This course lays the basis for further study and decision-making regarding issues of privacy in data collection and aggregation. Graduates of this course will be able to describe basic tenets of privacy, key terms and concepts, and discuss the evolution of privacy laws and legislation throughout the 20th century and into the 21st century. You will also be able to current trends in data collection, and describe aggregation, analysis, and intuition based on examples drawn from modern social media platforms. At the end of this course you will also be able to describe General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), describe current and pending Canadian and Albertan legislation affecting digital privacy (PIPA, PIPEDA, FOIPP), and be able to describe examples of privacy breaches and the fallout from privacy disasters.
